Re-Designing Flip Over Joy Stick Module

This project was undertaken as part of the course Project Usability and User eXperience Assessment in Design (UXAD) course at TU Delft’s MSc Design for Interaction program, running from February to June 2024. The collaboration was with Sunrise Medical, a global leader in mobility solutions like wheelchair for individuals in need. The product was 'Flip Over JoyStick Module' at the center of their electric wheelchair that allows the joystick to show when needed, and flip down when a flat table is required (while studying for example). 

Positioned centrally for optimal ergonomic accessibility, the joystick accommodates users of varying ages and motor abilities, catering predominantly to children while also serving the needs of adults. With a focus on ease of operation, the Flip-Over JSM intends to enables users in performing the flipping motion effortlessly with just one hand or minimal motor skills, enhancing the overall mobility experience for individuals with diverse needs.

The primary challenge was 'developing an improved ergonomically-driven flip-over mechanism, seamlessly transitioning the wheelchair from driving mode to table mode'. 

This entails a comprehensive reconsideration of overall ergonomics to ensure optimal usability. Additionally, addressing how the unit remains securely in place when flipped over and integrating safety features post-flip are critical considerations. Furthermore, the integration of buttons for direct seat adjustment control presents an additional layer of complexity in the design process, necessitating careful attention to usability and functionality while considering situations where motor and/or cognitive level of the user can be very limited.
