This was a project conceptualised by an Indian tyre company JK Tyres which collaborated with my college (Footwear Design & Development Institute, Noida, India) in making shoes out of discarded tyres (a recycling initiative). This was group project where selected final year students contributed. This was during my first year of undergraduate degree, and I got this amazing opportunity based on my works to participate in this project. I contributed my team in pattern cutting, sewing, and construction of some of the shoes in this video. While footwear seemed like a good option owing to favourable properties like grip etc, this wasn’t a typical easy-to-use material for a footwear. Even our hydraulic press cutting machines couldn’t easily cut through those radial tyres. This project was in news later when it went live on the Earth Day, 22 April 2011.
